Community and Nonprofit Collaboration in Los Angeles Post-Disaster Series

Undocumented workers are often among the most vulnerable in times of disaster, yet their resilience and contributions to recovery efforts cannot be overstated. In Los Angeles, the nonprofit organization CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights) played a pivotal role in supporting undocumented families affected by the fires.
CHIRLA partnered with local businesses and community leaders to establish the Undocumented Worker Relief Fund, providing direct financial assistance to those who lost their jobs or homes. One undocumented entrepreneur shared how the fund helped her rebuild her small tailoring business, enabling her to offer free clothing repairs to fellow community members in need.
It is estimated that over 10% of Los Angeles County’s workforce consists of undocumented individuals, contributing nearly $3 billion annually to the local economy. However, these workers face significant barriers to accessing disaster aid, with fewer than 15% eligible for federal assistance programs. CHIRLA’s efforts provided a crucial lifeline, ensuring that undocumented families could meet their basic needs and begin rebuilding their futures.
